The winter of 1941–42 on the Eastern Front exposed a catastrophic failure in German logistical planning: the Wehrmacht had not equipped its troops for the Russian winter. Tank crews improvised with whatever warm clothing could be found — civilian coats, blankets, and requisitioned Soviet gear — until purpose-made winter uniforms began reaching frontline units from 1942 onwards.
