The Kfz.1 — the standard German light cross-country car of the Second World War — was the Wehrmacht's answer to the need for a robust, go-anywhere personnel carrier for small units. The Type 170VK was a military adaptation of the Mercedes-Benz 170V civilian car, modified with higher ground clearance, military fittings, and the canvas tilt that provided basic weather protection for the four-man crew. Used by staff officers, reconnaissance units, and forward command elements, the Kfz.1 appears in operational photographs from every theatre the Wehrmacht fought in — the practical, unglamorous transport that kept small units mobile.
