The AH-64D Apache Longbow is the definitive evolution of America's primary attack helicopter — distinguished from its predecessor by the AN/APG-78 Longbow millimetre-wave fire control radar mounted above the main rotor in its characteristic dome. That radar allows the Apache Longbow to detect, classify, and engage up to 256 targets simultaneously while remaining masked behind terrain, populating up to 16 Hellfire missiles with targeting data and firing before the enemy is even aware of its presence. The AH-64D entered service in 1997 and saw combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, and multiple other theatres, establishing itself as the most capable anti-armour helicopter in the world and setting the standard against which all subsequent attack helicopter designs are measured.
