The Halberstadt CL.IV was the refined successor to the CL.II, entering service in the summer of 1918 with improved handling, a more powerful engine, and the shorter fuselage that characterised the early production batches. Built at the Hannoversche Flugzeugwerke (H.F.W.) factory in this early configuration, the CL.IV was deployed in the Schlachtstaffeln for low-level ground attack and close support during the final year of the First World War — operations that influenced German military thinking about air-ground cooperation for the following two decades. The CL.IV's short fuselage gave it notably different handling characteristics from the later long-fuselage production aircraft, making the early H.F.W. batches a distinct and specialist modelling subject.
