The Panzer IV Ausf. B was the second production variant of Germany's medium tank — a vehicle that would prove to be the workhorse of the Wehrmacht's armoured forces throughout the entire Second World War, the only German tank to remain in front-line production from 1936 to 1945. The Ausf. B introduced a more powerful engine and a revised commander's cupola, and saw combat in Poland in 1939 and France in 1940, where its short 7.5cm L/24 gun was primarily used for infantry support rather than tank-versus-tank engagements. The early Panzer IV variants like the B represent the tank in its original infantry support role, before the long-gun conversions of 1942 transformed it into a genuine anti-tank weapon. Mirage Hobby's 1/72 kit captures the Ausf. B in the configuration it wore during the Blitzkrieg campaigns.
