The North American F-100 Super Sabre was the USAF's first operational supersonic fighter, entering service in 1954 and becoming the backbone of Tactical Air Command through the late 1950s and into the 1960s. The C variant was a dedicated fighter-bomber optimised for the nuclear strike role, capable of delivering tactical nuclear weapons at low level and high speed — the sharp end of NATO's flexible response strategy.
