The Fokker D.XXI was the Netherlands' principal fighter at the time of the German invasion in May 1940, and in the five days of fighting it gave a remarkable account of itself against a Luftwaffe far superior in numbers and experience. Designed by Fokker in the mid-1930s as a light, manoeuvrable interceptor, the D.XXI was an unequal match for the Bf 109E in absolute performance terms — but Dutch pilots flying it claimed 37 confirmed kills against the Luftwaffe in five days of fighting before the Netherlands fell. The type also served with the Finnish Air Force, where it saw extensive combat against the Soviet Air Force during the Winter War and the Continuation War, and achieved some of the most remarkable kill ratios of any fighter in the early years of the conflict.
