The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon — later redesignated under Lockheed Martin following the merger — is the most widely produced Western jet fighter since the F-86 Sabre, with over 4,600 built for more than 25 air forces worldwide. Developed in the 1970s as a lightweight day fighter under the Air Force Lightweight Fighter programme, the F-16 grew into one of the most capable multi-role combat aircraft ever built, serving in every major US air campaign from the Gulf War of 1991 onwards. Its relaxed-stability fly-by-wire flight control system, reclined seat, and frameless bubble canopy set the template for a generation of fighter design that followed.
