The Yakovlev Yak-15 was the Soviet Union's first operational jet fighter, entering service in 1947 as a transitional design that grafted a German Jumo 004 turbojet — taken as war reparations — onto a modified Yak-3 piston fighter airframe. The result was a machine that looked like a propeller aircraft from the nose back and a jet from the nose forward, an oddity that nonetheless gave Soviet pilots their first experience of jet-powered flight and laid the doctrinal groundwork for the MiG-15 programme that would follow just years later. The Yak-15 served only briefly in front-line units before being superseded, making it an obscure but historically significant subject that PM Model has covered in 1/72 scale.
