The Boeing E-3 Sentry is NATO’s airborne early warning and control system — a militarised 707 airframe carrying a 9-metre rotating radar dome above the fuselage that can detect aircraft at ranges of over 400km while simultaneously managing the air battle through on-board controllers. Entering USAF service in 1977 and NATO service in 1982, the E-3 transformed tactical air warfare by providing a persistent, survivable radar picture that ground-based systems could never match. E-3s have been at the centre of every major NATO air operation since the Falklands era and remain the alliance’s primary airborne battle management platform. The distinctive rotodome makes the E-3 one of the most immediately recognisable aircraft in any collection, and Revell’s 1/144 kit captures that silhouette accurately.
