The Heinkel He 111 was the Luftwaffe’s primary medium bomber of the Second World War — a twin-engine aircraft that had been designed in the mid-1930s under the cover of a civil airliner and was already in service with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War by 1937. The P-1 was one of the earliest production variants, characterised by its stepped, glazed cockpit windscreen rather than the fully glazed asymmetric nose that would appear on later marks — giving it a more conventional bomber appearance and making it one of the most visually distinct of all He 111 variants. By the Battle of Britain in 1940, the He 111 was the most numerous Luftwaffe bomber over England, suffering heavy losses to RAF fighters but continuing to fly until the end of the war in increasingly difficult circumstances. Revell’s 1/32 kit is a large-scale, impressive rendition of this important aircraft, rewarding careful attention to the cockpit and glazing detail that the scale makes possible.
