The Junkers Ju 290 was Germany's most capable long-range maritime patrol and transport aircraft of the Second World War — a four-engine heavy that grew out of the earlier Ju 90 airliner and was developed into an increasingly capable platform as the Battle of the Atlantic demanded ever-longer search ranges. The A-5 and A-7 variants were the definitive maritime reconnaissance versions, capable of patrolling the mid-Atlantic to shadow Allied convoys and direct U-boats onto their prey — operating far beyond the reach of any Allied shore-based fighter.
