The Northrop Grumman Firebird is an optionally piloted aircraft developed in the late 2000s as a privately funded demonstrator, designed to operate either with a pilot aboard or as an unmanned system using the same airframe without modification. Its modular payload system, long-endurance capability, and conventional aircraft handling characteristics were intended to offer intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capability with lower operating costs than purpose-built UAVs. The Firebird flew from 2012 and was demonstrated to various US government customers, though it did not enter production — making it an obscure but genuinely interesting subject representing the early development of the optionally piloted concept. Sova-M’s 1/72 kit is the only readily available injection-moulded model of this aircraft.
