The Boulton Paul Defiant NF Mk.II was the night-fighter adaptation of an aircraft that had failed catastrophically as a day fighter — its four-gun power-operated turret, formidable against bombers attacking from below, had proved disastrously vulnerable once the Luftwaffe learned not to attack from astern. Redeployed to night fighting from late 1940, the Defiant found a role that suited it better, and with the addition of AI Mk.IV airborne interception radar the NF Mk.II became a competent if limited night fighter that achieved real success against the Blitz before being replaced by the Beaufighter and Mosquito. Special Hobby’s 1/72 kit covers this radar-equipped night-fighting variant with its distinctive AI aerial array — a rarely modelled but historically significant chapter in the Defiant’s career.
