The Gloster Meteor Prone Pilot was one of the more unusual experimental programmes of early British jet aviation — a modified F.8 in which a second pilot position was installed in an extended nose, with the pilot lying face-down in a prone position to investigate whether this configuration could improve tolerance to high-g manoeuvres by distributing g-forces along the body’s length rather than from head to foot. The aircraft, serial WK935, flew in this configuration from 1954 with Eric “Winkle” Brown and other test pilots, ultimately concluding that the ergonomic and practical disadvantages outweighed the physiological benefits. It remains one of the more genuinely strange chapters in British test aviation, and Special Hobby’s 1/72 kit is the only readily available model of this remarkable machine.
