The Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.21 was one of the most radically developed variants of the entire Spitfire lineage — powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon 61 driving a five-bladed contra-rotating propeller, with a completely redesigned wing of increased span and area that gave it a performance envelope far removed from the original 1936 prototype. So different was the Mk.21 in handling that test pilots initially recommended it unfit for service, and significant modifications to the tail surfaces were required before it was cleared. Entering service in January 1945, too late for the European war, the Mk.21 served post-war with RAF Fighter Command and several overseas air forces into the early 1950s. Special Hobby’s 1/72 kit covers post-war service examples with appropriate markings.
