The TBM-3S Avenger was the Royal Canadian Navy’s primary anti-submarine aircraft of the early Cold War period, converted from wartime torpedo bomber airframes and fitted with search radar and sonobuoy equipment for the submarine-hunting role that dominated post-war naval aviation priorities. The AS.3, AS.4, and AS.6 were the successive Royal Canadian Navy conversion standards, each adding capability as the Cold War submarine threat developed. Canada’s Avengers served aboard HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure into the late 1950s, when they were finally replaced by the Grumman CS2F Tracker. Sword’s short-run 1/72 kit covers all three Canadian AS variants — a niche subject with dedicated appeal to RCN and Cold War naval aviation enthusiasts.
