The TBM-3U was a utility conversion of the Avenger airframe — the third seat and much of the military equipment removed to create a general-purpose transport and liaison aircraft used for a wide range of miscellaneous support tasks in the post-war US Navy. Avenger airframes in various utility configurations soldiered on well into the 1950s, their robustness and range making them useful long after their combat roles had been taken over by more modern types. Sword’s 1/72 short-run kit covers this often-overlooked utility variant of one of the most significant Allied naval aircraft of the war.
The Avenger put to work in peacetime — TBM-3U utility variant in 1/72 scale.
