The Chieftain Mk. 5 was the British Army’s main battle tank from the late 1960s into the 1980s — at its introduction the most heavily armed and armoured tank in NATO service, its 120mm L11A5 rifled gun giving it a decisive advantage over contemporary Soviet armour at the long ranges of the North German Plain. The Mk. 5 introduced the improved L60 engine in its later development standard and the Improved Fire Control System, bringing the Chieftain’s already formidable capability to its most mature expression. The Chieftain served with the British Army of the Rhine and was exported to Iran, where it saw combat in the Iran-Iraq War. Tamiya’s 1/35 kit is the classic model of this important Cold War tank.
