The Archer was one of the more unconventional Allied armoured vehicles of the Second World War — a 17-pounder anti-tank gun mounted in a rear-facing configuration on a Valentine tank chassis, the gun pointing over the engine deck so that the vehicle had to reverse into action and drive forwards to withdraw. This arrangement minimised the silhouette and allowed the 17-pounder to be mounted on a chassis that could not accommodate it in a conventional forward-facing installation. Despite its peculiar fighting characteristics, the Archer was well-regarded by its crews for its accuracy and concealment potential, and it remained in British service into the 1950s.
