The Volkswagen Kübelwagen Type 82 was the Wehrmacht’s standard light utility vehicle — the German equivalent of the Allied Jeep, built on the Beetle’s floorpan and mechanicals with a lightweight body and air-cooled engine that proved well-suited to the extremes of temperature encountered from the Arctic to the Western Desert. Over 50,000 were built between 1940 and 1945, serving in every theatre in roles from command car to signals vehicle and artillery tractor. Simpler and less capable off-road than the Jeep, the Kübelwagen nonetheless proved reliable and practical in conditions that destroyed more conventional vehicles. Tamiya’s 1/35 kit is the definitive model of this ubiquitous vehicle.
