The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen Type 166 was the amphibious companion to the Kübelwagen — the most produced amphibious car in history, with over 14,000 built between 1942 and 1944, used by German forces in every theatre where water crossings presented a challenge. Propelled in water by a folding propeller engaged from the rear, the Schwimmwagen could cross rivers and inundated terrain without preparation, making it invaluable for reconnaissance and liaison work across the Eastern Front, Italy, and Northwest Europe. Its combination of genuine amphibious capability with the Beetle's reliable mechanics made it one of the more practically successful German military vehicles of the war. Tamiya's 1/35 kit is the standard tooling of this distinctive vehicle.
