The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen Type 166 was the amphibious companion to the Kübelwagen — the most produced amphibious car in history, with over 14,000 built between 1942 and 1944, used by German forces in every theatre where water crossings presented a challenge to conventional wheeled vehicles. The wide wheel version reflects the field modification introduced to improve cross-country performance on soft ground, particularly on the Eastern Front. Propelled in water by a folding propeller engaged from the rear, the Schwimmwagen could cross rivers and inundated terrain without preparation, making it invaluable for reconnaissance and liaison work. Tamiya's 1/35 kit covers this useful late-production variant.
