The Type 97 Chi-Ha was the Imperial Japanese Army’s standard medium tank throughout the Second World War — a vehicle that was competitive in 1938 when it entered service but increasingly outclassed by Allied armour as the war progressed, its 57mm short-barrel gun adequate for infantry support but limited in the anti-tank role. The Chi-Ha served from China through Malaya and the Philippines to the final defence of the home islands, and in the conditions of the Pacific theatre — where tank versus tank combat was relatively rare and infantry support the primary mission — it performed adequately in its intended role. Tamiya’s 1/35 kit is a thorough treatment of Japan’s most important tank.
