The Panzer IV/70(A) was the Alkett-built version of the Jagdpanzer IV with the long 7.5cm PaK 42 gun — distinguishable from the Vomag-built IV/70(V) by its use of the standard Panzer IV running gear rather than the modified arrangement of the latter. Entering service in 1944, the IV/70 combined an exceptionally low silhouette with the Panther’s gun in a vehicle built on the proven Panzer IV chassis — giving front-line units a tank destroyer with outstanding anti-armour capability at a cost the German industry could still sustain.
