The Imperial Japanese Navy battleship Yamato was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever built — 72,000 tonnes, nine 46cm main guns, and armour of up to 650mm at the turret faces. She was an anachronism from her commissioning, designed for a decisive fleet engagement that the age of the carrier had already rendered obsolete, and she spent most of the Pacific War at anchor while the real naval battles were decided by aircraft. Her final mission in April 1945 — a one-way voyage to Okinawa without air cover — ended with her sinking under wave after wave of American carrier aircraft, taking nearly 2,500 men with her.
