An Iowa-class ship of 57,000 tonnes, armed with nine 16-inch guns capable of hurling a 2,700lb shell 23 miles with remarkable accuracy, New Jersey combined the ultimate expression of battleship firepower with the speed of 33 knots that made the Iowa class uniquely capable.
