The Douglas A-1H Skyraider is the ultimate expression of the piston-engined attack aircraft — a single-seat, single-engine aircraft of enormous load-carrying capacity that entered service in 1946 and was still flying combat missions over Vietnam two decades later, outlasting many of the jets that were supposed to replace it. Its ability to carry an extraordinary weight of ordnance, loiter for hours over the target area, and absorb punishment that would have destroyed lighter aircraft made it uniquely valuable for close air support and search-and-rescue escort, and the US Navy and South Vietnamese Air Force flew it until the mid-1970s. Tamiya's 1/48 Skyraider is a thorough treatment of this remarkable and long-lived aircraft.
