The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 — the Dora — was Germany's finest piston-engined fighter, the Junkers Jumo 213A inline engine giving the airframe the high-altitude performance that the BMW 801 radial of earlier variants lacked. Entering service in September 1944, the D-9 was tasked initially with protecting the Me 262 jet bases during the vulnerable take-off and landing phases, and in that role and in general air superiority it proved itself the equal of the P-51D and superior to most other Allied fighters at altitude. Its clean lines and the distinctive annular radiator of the Jumo installation make it one of the most elegant German fighters of the war. Tamiya's 1/48 Fw 190 D-9 is the benchmark kit for the subject.
