The Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat was the US Navy's carrier fighter at the outbreak of the Pacific War — the aircraft that fought at Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal, holding the line against the Zero until the Hellcat was ready. Outclassed in many respects by the more agile A6M, the F4F-4's ruggedness, self-sealing tanks, and pilot armour gave its crews a survival advantage that Zero pilots lacked, and tactical discipline in the Thach Weave allowed experienced USN pilots to fight the Zero on more equal terms. The six-gun F4F-4 was the definitive Wildcat of the critical 1942 campaign period. Tamiya's 1/48 kit is a precision tooling of this historically important aircraft.
