The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was the only Japanese Army fighter of the Second World War powered by a liquid-cooled inline engine — its Kawasaki Ha-40 (a licence-built derivative of the Daimler-Benz DB 601) giving it a profile quite unlike the radial-engined fighters that dominated the JAAF, and leading Allied intelligence to initially misidentify it as a Messerschmitt or Macchi. Fast, well-armed by Japanese standards, and more structurally robust than most contemporaries, the Ki-61-Id was the final definitive variant before production difficulties with the Ha-140 engine forced a change to the radial-engined Ki-100. Tamiya's 1/48 kit pairs the Hien with a 4x4 light vehicle for a versatile airfield scene combination.
