The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb was the RAF's standard single-seat fighter through the critical period of 1941 and 1942, the eight-gun Mk.I/II replaced by the cannon-armed Vb with its two 20mm Hispano cannon and four .303 Brownings — a weapons fit that finally gave Fighter Command a genuine answer to the armoured aircraft of the Luftwaffe. The Vb served in every theatre from the Western Desert to Malta and the Channel Front, and in sheer numbers it was the most important Spitfire variant of the war's first half. Tamiya's 1/48 kit is the definitive small-scale Spitfire Vb, engineered to the standards that made their 1/48 aircraft range the benchmark for the scale.
