The German battlecruiser Gneisenau was one of the Kriegsmarine's two Scharnhorst-class capital ships — fast, well-armoured, and armed with nine 28cm guns in three triple turrets that while lighter than the armament of contemporary British capital ships gave her a formidable broadside. Operating in company with her sister Scharnhorst, Gneisenau participated in the Norwegian campaign, the sinking of HMS Glorious, Atlantic commerce raiding, and the audacious Channel Dash of February 1942 before being put out of action by bombing and ultimately scuttled at Gdynia. Tamiya's 1/700 Waterline Series kit captures her in her operational Atlantic configuration.
