USS Yorktown CV-5 was the US Navy fleet carrier whose contribution to the Battle of Midway in June 1942 was arguably decisive — repaired in just 72 hours at Pearl Harbor after severe damage at Coral Sea, she embarked an air group and sailed to Midway, where her aircraft participated in the destruction of three Japanese fleet carriers before she was herself fatally damaged by air attack and submarine torpedo and sank on 7 June 1942. The sacrifice of Yorktown and her air group, in combination with the losses of the Japanese carriers, permanently shifted the balance of naval air power in the Pacific. Tamiya's 1/700 Waterline kit captures Yorktown in her 1942 Midway configuration.
