The Kyushu J7W1 Shinden — “Magnificent Lightning” — was Japan's most radical combat aircraft design of the Second World War: a canard pusher configuration with the engine behind the pilot driving a six-blade propeller, four 30mm cannon in the nose, and a performance specification intended to match the B-29 at altitude. Only two prototypes were completed before Japan's surrender ended the programme, making the Shinden one of the great might-have-beens of aviation history — an aircraft that in concept anticipated the jet age while still relying on a piston engine. Tamiya's 1/72 kit offers the rare opportunity to build this extraordinary experimental aircraft in a quality tooling.
