The Bergepanzer 38 was the armoured recovery vehicle conversion of the Hetzer tank destroyer — itself built on the Czechoslovak LT vz. 38 light tank chassis — produced from 1944 to provide the Panzer and Panzerjäger units equipped with the Hetzer with a compatible recovery vehicle capable of operating in terrain that would immobilise a wheeled recovery vehicle. The open-topped fighting compartment of the standard Hetzer was replaced with a winch and recovery equipment, retaining the distinctive low-profile, heavily sloped armour that made the Hetzer so effective as a tank destroyer and so difficult to engage frontally. Produced in small numbers, the Bergepanzer 38 is a rarely modelled specialist vehicle — Thunder Model’s 1/35 kit fills a genuine gap in the German recovery vehicle range.
