The Long Range Desert Group was the British Army’s deep penetration raiding and reconnaissance force in North Africa from 1940 to 1943 — small patrols operating hundreds of miles behind Axis lines, navigating the open desert by sun compass and theodolite, and striking targets that conventional forces could not reach. Their vehicles were heavily modified Canadian Military Pattern trucks, stripped of unnecessary weight and armed with a formidable array of weapons including Vickers K guns, Lewis guns, and Browning machine guns in combinations that varied from patrol to patrol. The F30 Gun Truck represents a specific and distinctive LRDG configuration, and Thunder Model’s 1/35 kit captures the improvised, purposeful character of these remarkable vehicles — ideal for a diorama set against the vastness of the Libyan Sand Sea.
