HMS Roberts was a Roberts-class monitor — a shallow-draught shore bombardment vessel built around two 15-inch guns salvaged from the pre-dreadnought battleship HMS Marshal Soult, designed specifically to deliver heavy naval gunfire support to amphibious landings and coastal operations where conventional warships could not operate. Monitors were unglamorous but operationally vital warships, and Roberts served in the bombardment of Sicily, Salerno, and Normandy, her 15-inch guns providing the same weight of fire as a capital ship at a fraction of the cost and risk. Trumpeter’s 1/350 kit captures this unusual and historically important class of warship.
