HMS Royal Oak was a Royal Sovereign-class battleship whose loss on 14 October 1939 delivered one of the most shocking blows of the early naval war — penetrated in the supposedly secure anchorage of Scapa Flow by the German submarine U-47 under Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien, she was struck by four torpedoes and sank in thirteen minutes with the loss of 833 men. The sinking of Royal Oak at anchor in the Home Fleet’s own base demonstrated the vulnerability of capital ships to submarine attack even in harbour and triggered major improvements to the Scapa Flow defences. Trumpeter’s 1/350 kit captures this R-class battleship in her pre-war configuration.
