The PLAN Type 039G Song-class submarine was China’s most capable conventionally-powered submarine when it entered service in the late 1990s — a significant advance over earlier Chinese submarine designs, incorporating a teardrop hull form, quieting measures, and the ability to launch YJ-82 anti-ship missiles from torpedo tubes while submerged. The Song class attracted considerable international attention in 2006 when one surfaced undetected near USS Kitty Hawk during a carrier strike group exercise in the Pacific. This pre-painted version arrives with hull already finished for display. Trumpeter’s 1/350 kit captures the Type 039G in accurate external detail.
