The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was the most famous commerce raider of the early war period — her diesel engines giving her the range to operate across the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, her 11-inch guns outranging any cruiser that could catch her, and her speed outrunning any battleship that could match her guns. Her commerce raiding career came to an end at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939, where three British cruisers under Commodore Harwood cornered her and inflicted sufficient damage that her captain, Hans Langsdorff, chose to scuttle her in Montevideo rather than break out. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures Graf Spee in her 1937 pre-war configuration.
