The German Type XXIII U-boat was the coastal submarine of the revolutionary new generation — smaller than the ocean-going Type XXI but sharing its all-electric propulsion concept that allowed it to run submerged at high speed without snorkelling, making it effectively immune to the Allied radar and anti-submarine tactics that had defeated the earlier U-boat fleet. Small enough to operate in the shallow coastal waters of the North Sea and British coastal areas where conventional U-boats could not, the Type XXIII entered service in early 1945 and achieved a 100% success rate on the patrols it completed before the German surrender. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures this technologically advanced small submarine.
