HMS Barham was a Queen Elizabeth-class fast battleship whose end was one of the most dramatic losses of the naval war — torpedoed by the German submarine U-331 on 25 November 1941 off the Egyptian coast, she capsized and exploded with the loss of 862 men in a sinking filmed by a newsreel camera aboard a nearby destroyer. The footage of Barham’s magazine explosion, which blew her stern off as she rolled over, was one of the most shocking naval images of the war. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures her in her 1941 Mediterranean Fleet configuration, the ship as she appeared in the months before her loss.
