HMS Colombo was a C-class light cruiser converted into an anti-aircraft cruiser — her original armament replaced with high-angle guns to provide dedicated fleet air defence during the intensive air threat operations of the Second World War. She served in the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean, providing anti-aircraft cover at a period when the Royal Navy was acutely aware of the threat posed by land-based and carrier aircraft to surface warships. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures this specialised anti-aircraft conversion, a useful and less commonly modelled Royal Navy warship type.
