HMS Exeter was a York-class heavy cruiser best known for her role in the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939 — one of three cruisers that fought the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, Exeter absorbing the heaviest punishment of the engagement before Graf Spee broke off and sought refuge in Montevideo. Exeter returned to the South Atlantic for repairs, then served in the Far East where she was sunk by Japanese forces at the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures this historically significant cruiser whose River Plate action was one of the Royal Navy’s celebrated early war victories.
