HMS Nelson in her 1944 configuration represents the ship after her wartime refits had substantially augmented her close-range anti-aircraft armament — the distinctive triple-forward-turret Nelson-class battleship that had bombarded Sicily and Salerno in 1943 now carrying the Bofors and Oerlikon guns that reflect lessons of air attack learned the hard way in the Mediterranean. Nelson was present at the Italian armistice signing aboard her in September 1943, making her a witness to one of the war’s most significant diplomatic moments. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures her in this 1944 late-war configuration.
