The Italian battleship Roma was the third and most modern of the Littorio-class battleships — 45,000 tonnes, nine 381mm guns, and a speed of 30 knots that made her one of the most capable capital ships afloat. Her end came on 9 September 1943, the day after the Italian armistice, when she was sunk by German Fritz-X radio-controlled bombs while steaming to surrender to the Allies at Malta — the first capital ship in history sunk by a precision-guided weapon, her forward magazine detonating in an explosion that killed 1,393 men. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures Roma in her 1943 configuration, the beautiful Littorio-class design at the moment of its destruction.
