HMS Calcutta was a C-class light cruiser converted into an anti-aircraft cruiser in 1939 — her 6-inch guns replaced by eight 4-inch high-angle guns to create a dedicated fleet air defence vessel for the Mediterranean Fleet. She served in the Norwegian campaign and the Mediterranean, providing anti-aircraft cover for the fleet during the intense Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica attacks of 1941, before being sunk by German aircraft north of Alexandria in June 1941. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit captures this specialised anti-aircraft conversion, a less commonly modelled but historically important Royal Navy warship type.
