The Chinese Jiaolong — “Sea Dragon” — was China’s first deep-sea manned submersible capable of operating at 7,000 metres, making it one of a very small number of vehicles in history able to reach that depth. Developed by the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association and first diving in 2010, Jiaolong reached its record depth of 7,062 metres in the Mariana Trench in 2012, establishing China as only the fifth nation to develop a crewed submersible capable of deep ocean research at that depth. Trumpeter’s 1/72 kit captures this significant deep-sea research vehicle in the scale that does justice to its compact and purposeful design.
