Trumpeter’s 1/72 scale Westland Wyvern S.4 (01619) depicts one of the Fleet Air Arm’s more unusual post-war aircraft. Designed as a carrier-based strike fighter, the Wyvern paired a turboprop engine with contra-rotating propellers, a distinctive arrangement in an era when jet aircraft were rapidly taking over front-line service.
The S.4 entered Royal Navy service in the 1950s and saw combat during the 1956 Suez Crisis. That brief operational career gives this subject a place in the story of British naval aviation between piston-engine fighters and the jet age. A characterful build for collectors of Cold War aircraft and carrier-based models.
